Vintage Shopping
With the first half of the 1940’s dominated by WWII; fashion lost its importance. Both men and women were often seen in their uniforms and what little clothing there was, was dictated by rationing. It wasn’t until the late 1940’s that fashion reemerged and began to dominate the early 1950’s. Men moved to more casual styles and women’s fashion prioritised elegance, formality and perfectly matched accessories. The nipped in waist and full-skirted silhouette was an instant success. As the 50’s progressed, inspiration was sought from the “teenager,” and straighter, slimmer lines appeared, with the wiggle dress a particular favourite.
For many, the fashion from this period is a way of life. That said, please do not feel you have to buy the clothes to attend vintage events. There is always a healthy balance between the two, and the one thing we do have in common, is that we both share a passion for the music and this wonderful dance style.
If you do want to take things one step further and purchase your first vintage outfit, then the following companies offer the very best in reproduction vintage clothing, and they come highly recommended. Original clothing can still be found, but it is becoming harder to source, and sizes and price can vary dramatically as a result.
Happy shopping!
