Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka, has a rich cultural blend of Sinhalese, Tamil, and other influences, and this is reflected in its vibrant festivals, ancient temples, colonial architecture, and diverse cuisine. Buddhism is the dominant religion, and it shapes much of the cultural landscape. Expect to encounter strong family ties and a warm welcome.
Places of interest include: Kandy the cultural heartland with its Temple of the Tooth Relic, the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya an ancient rock fortress, Galle historic fort, Yala National Park, tea plantations in the hill country and beaches in Bentota or Unawatuna.
The Maldives
Has a predominantly Muslim culture with a strong emphasis on family and community. As in Sri Lanka, you can expect a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Holiday resorts often take on a unique culture of their own but traditional Maldivian life revolves around the sea; fishing and boatbuilding.
Places of interest: Malé is the capital city and local islands offer a glimpse of traditional life. Please dress modestly, when visiting these islands. The Maldives themselves offer excellent sites for diving and snorkelling.
